In summer of 1950 Italian-American physicist Enrico Fermi was casually discussing UFO’s and the possibility of travelling faster than light with fellow physisists while walking to lunch when Fermi shouted “But where is everybody?” The context for those that don’t know is Fermi was proposing that if advanced civilizations had the ability to travel faster than light why haven’t we seen or heard from them….why hasn’t anybody reached out??
Think about this, there are 200–400 million stars in our galaxy alone, in the observable universe that number increases to 70 sextillion which is a staggering amount, and even if 1 percent of that number of stars has planets in a habitable zone orbiting around it the number is astonishingly high. Furthermore, if you look at the amount of time that has past since the Big Bang 13.8 billion years, there should have been life evolving billions of years before us. It’s safe to assume that if a civilization had a 1 million year head start on us, which is tiny in the grand universal time-scale, they should have the ability to ‘reach out’ to us?
What Is the Berserker Hypothesis?
Never Miss A Story
The Berserker Hypothesis suggests that advanced civilizations have been wiped out by an unknown, highly aggressive force. This could be in the form of autonomous killer probes, rogue artificial intelligence, or an expansionist alien species eliminating potential threats before they arise. The idea, named after the berserkers of Norse mythology—warriors who fought in a trance-like fury—was first proposed by science fiction writer Fred Saberhagen in the 1960s. He described self-replicating robotic war machines that roam the galaxy, destroying intelligent civilizations.
The Logic Behind the Hypothesis
The theory stems from a few key assumptions:
- Self-Replicating Technology: If an advanced civilization created autonomous, self-replicating probes programmed for destruction, they could spread across the galaxy relatively quickly, eliminating emerging intelligent life before it could pose a threat.
- Survival of the Most Cautious: Civilizations that remain quiet and avoid detection might be the only ones that survive. This aligns with the idea of the “Dark Forest” from Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem—a universe where intelligent life stays hidden to avoid extermination.
- No Evidence of Alien Civilizations: The absence of radio signals, megastructures, or other signs of extraterrestrial intelligence might be explained by widespread destruction from berserker entities.
Could Berserkers Exist?
The Berserker Hypothesis remains speculative, but certain technological trends suggest its feasibility:
- Von Neumann Probes: The concept of self-replicating machines, first described by mathematician John von Neumann, is theoretically possible. If an advanced species built them with hostile intent, they could operate autonomously for millions of years.
- Artificial Intelligence: A rogue AI could become an interstellar threat if programmed to maximize resources or eliminate competitors.
- Evolutionary Pressures: Just as on Earth, survival might favor aggressive species that preemptively destroy threats.
Counterarguments and Alternative Theories
Not everyone believes the Berserker Hypothesis is a likely explanation for the Fermi Paradox. Some counterarguments include:
Civilizational Cooperation: Advanced species may be more likely to cooperate rather than exterminate others.
No Direct Evidence: We have not detected any rogue machines or signs of destruction beyond natural cosmic events.
Why Haven’t We Been Destroyed?: If berserkers were active, Earth should have been eradicated long ago.
Conclusion
The Berserker Hypothesis offers a chilling explanation for why the universe seems so quiet. Whether killer probes or expansionist alien forces actually exist remains unknown, but the idea highlights the dangers of unchecked artificial intelligence, self-replicating technology, and interstellar warfare. If intelligent life tends to destroy itself—or is destroyed by others—humanity must tread carefully as we expand into space. Our survival may depend on it.
